Why Remote Employers Avoid Hiring GenZ
Here's how to be the best GenZ and get hired nonetheless!
Hi Superstar,
Sometimes I wonder on the popularity of we, GenZs.
It’s an undeniable fact that we, Generation Z, often find ourselves at the center of discussions, debates, and yes, even controversies, especially within the job market. Employers have frequently expressed their apprehension and discomfort when it comes to hiring members of GenZ, citing various concerns and reasons for their hesitancy.
One common grievance from employers revolves around what they perceive as a sense of entitlement among GenZs. Some employers feel that our generation demands less work and more pay, often insisting on being compensated what we deem as our true worth. Additionally, employers express frustration over what they view as excessive job hopping among GenZ employees.
Just the other day, I was scrolling through a Reddit community where this very topic sparked a heated discussion. Opinions flew from both sides, sparking what seemed like a private generational war between Millennials and GenZs. According to GenZs, they get hired because they're seen as cheap labor, expected to work tirelessly and even assume roles beyond their contract. Their defense? They work diligently but eventually seek out better opportunities elsewhere when its time to seek greener pastures. On the flip side, Millennials argue that GenZs lack loyalty, swiftly moving on from jobs when they no longer serve their interests.
Well, it's a delicate balance—no one wants to feel taken advantage of in a job, yet stability and adaptability are crucial. As the Judge in this article, I take no sides, but I am a GenZ, and one thing I know for sure is that we are go-getters and hustlers. For many GenZ individuals, job hopping isn't merely a flighty pursuit of greener pastures but rather a strategic career move driven by a desire for personal and professional growth. In today's fast-paced, rapidly evolving job market, staying in one role for an extended period may no longer be the most effective path to advancement. GenZ individuals understand the importance of gaining diverse experiences, acquiring new skills, and positioning themselves for future opportunities.
Here is why I think some employers shy away from hiring GenZ?
For starters, GenZs are audacious and unapologetically assertive when it comes to their careers. Unlike previous generations, they know what they “Clearly” want and are less willing to compromise in most situations. Their boldness can be refreshing but also intimidating, especially for employers accustomed to a more deferential approach.
Furthermore, GenZs often possess a boldness that clashes with traditional workplace norms, particularly those upheld by older generations of employers. This clash can create tension, as GenZs challenge hierarchical structures and demand a more egalitarian workplace culture.
However, amidst the debate surrounding GenZs and their perceived drawbacks in the hiring process, there are ways for GenZ individuals to stand out and secure employment opportunities.
Strategies to improve your chances of being hired:
Highlight Your Skills and Accomplishments: Instead of focusing solely on perceived entitlement or job hopping tendencies, emphasize your skills, accomplishments, and unique contributions you can bring to the table.
Demonstrate Adaptability: Showcase your ability to adapt to different environments, technologies, and work methodologies. Highlight any instances where you've successfully navigated change or overcome challenges.
Emphasize Professional Growth: Communicate your commitment to continuous learning and professional development. Highlight any relevant certifications, courses, or experiences that demonstrate your dedication to personal and career growth.
Showcase Your Work Ethic: Prove your worth through your work ethic and dedication. Share examples of times when you've gone above and beyond expectations or exceeded targets.
Build Strong Relationships: Foster positive relationships with potential employers and colleagues. Networking and building connections within your industry can often lead to valuable job opportunities.
Lastly, in all fairness, I believe it's crucial to recognize the unique strengths that GenZ individuals bring to the table. Growing up in a hyper-connected, technologically driven world, GenZ is often characterized by its digital fluency, entrepreneurial spirit, and social consciousness. These qualities can be invaluable in navigating the complexities of modern workplaces and driving innovation. As an Employer, rather than resorting to blanket generalizations or discriminatory practices, you must strive to understand and harness the potential of this emerging talent pool.
