The Imposter Syndrome Effect
How self-doubt makes you stagnant and unemployed in the Job Market
“And yet I feared being found out to be a fraud”
Hi Superstar,
Have you ever felt like a fraud or you aren’t good enough? If you have, that’s Imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is a pervasive feeling of unworthiness or incompetence, even in the face of significant accomplishments and success. While most commonly experienced in the workplace, it can manifest in various aspects of life. This thinking pattern leads individuals to doubt their achievements and fear exposure as a "fraud." Those afflicted often feel like impostors despite being intelligent, skilled, and capable professionals deserving of accolades and praise. Rather than celebrating their successes, they worry that they have somehow deceived others into thinking they are competent. Consequently, they live in constant fear of being "found out" or "exposed."
Many successful individuals, including Maya Angelou, Neil Armstrong, Steve Jobs, Michelle Obama, Meryl Streep, and Viola Davis, have grappled with imposter syndrome at some point. It is a common experience that can plague even those who have built successful careers. The nagging voice in our heads, whispering thoughts like "I'm not good enough" or "I don't deserve this significant pay," persists despite our achievements, branding us as frauds.
Recently, I delved deep into this sense of "fraud," realizing that our imposter voice, often accompanied by inaction, stems from fear. A part of our minds becomes apprehensive when our ideas seem grand or our talents exceptional. The mind attempts to temper this subconscious anxiety by convincing us that achieving greatness is impossible. It's akin to using a knife to cut ourselves off from potential success.
As aptly expressed by Arianna Huffington, renowned author, syndicated columnist, co-founder of The Huffington Post, and CEO of Thrive Global:
My greatest obstacle has been the voice in my head that I call my obnoxious roommate. I wish someone would invent a tape recorder that we could attach to our brains to record everything we tell ourselves. We would realize how important it is to stop this negative self-talk. It means pushing back against our obnoxious roommate with a dose of wisdom.
How to Identify Imposter Syndrome
Despite its prevalence, the signs of imposter syndrome are often overlooked in our daily lives. Recognizing these signs is the initial step towards overcoming this phenomenon.
You might be experiencing imposter syndrome if:
You turn down growth or visibility at work due to self-doubt
Accepting praise is difficult for you.
People close to you notice a decline in your confidence.
You attribute your success to luck rather than acknowledging your preparation and hard work.
You apologize for yourself, even when you haven't done anything wrong.
You set incredibly—sometimes impossibly—high standards for yourself.
The fear of failure immobilizes you.
Expressing confidence is avoided because you fear it will be perceived as overcompensating or obnoxious.
You are convinced that you are not enough.
How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome in Your Career
So, how do you overcome this nagging feeling and regain your confidence in your career?
1. Acknowledge Your Achievements: Take a moment to reflect on your journey and acknowledge your achievements. Instead of attributing your success to luck or coincidence, recognize the hard work, dedication, and skill that got you where you are today. It's okay to pat yourself on the back and say, "I earned this."
2. Embrace Your Unique Journey: We often fall into the comparison trap, measuring our success against others. Remember, everyone's journey is unique. Your path might have its twists and turns, but that doesn't diminish your achievements. Embrace your individuality and celebrate the hurdles you've overcome.
3. Talk About It: Imposter syndrome thrives in silence. Share your feelings with friends, mentors, or colleagues. You'll be surprised how many people can relate. Sometimes, just voicing your insecurities can be incredibly liberating, and you might discover that others have faced similar challenges.
4. Focus on Growth, Not Perfection: Setting high standards is admirable, but perfection is an unattainable goal. Shift your mindset from perfectionism to continuous improvement. Embrace the learning process and view each challenge as an opportunity to grow. Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination.
5. Celebrate Small Wins: It's easy to overlook the small victories in the pursuit of larger goals. Take time to celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how minor they may seem. Recognizing these wins reinforces your capabilities and helps counteract the imposter syndrome's negative narrative.
6. Seek Constructive Feedback: Instead of fearing feedback, actively seek it out. Constructive criticism provides valuable insights into areas for improvement and reinforces your strengths. Embracing feedback as a tool for growth can help break the imposter syndrome cycle.
7. Develop a Support System: Surround yourself with a supportive network of friends, family, and colleagues who uplift and encourage you. Having a reliable support system can serve as a reality check when imposter syndrome rears its head, reminding you of your worth.
8. Fake It Till You Make It (with a Twist): While the "fake it till you make it" mantra is often cited, consider reframing it. Instead of pretending to be someone you're not, focus on projecting confidence in your abilities. Stand tall, speak with assurance, and watch how your mindset begins to shift.
Remember, overcoming imposter syndrome is an ongoing process. Be patient with yourself, celebrate your successes, and embrace the unique journey that is your career. You're not an imposter; you're a superstar in the making!
