Planting Seeds in your Career
Sow a seed in your career that will grow into a garden of opportunities
Hi Superstar,
Harvest does not come in a day nor does it come on the second day, it takes a while. Like natural progression, seeds take time to grow, it takes some dedicated watering to help them sprout. When you sow a seed, the plant doesn’t appear the next day. And there are circumstances when the time between planting the seed and it germinating is so long that you think nothing is happening because it is not visible to the naked eye.
How does this relate to your career?
Planting new seeds could be taking new professional courses to give you more employment options, it could be informing your manager or HR that you are interested in transitioning to a higher role, it could be letting people in your network know that you are interested in new employment opportunities, or it could be building your personal brand online and becoming more active. In all of these instances, you are taking action, you are planting new seeds. However, you have to realize that sometimes, these seeds will take time to bear fruit, and some may not bear fruit at all.
You need to be patient. Seeds don’t stay in that form forever. If you nurture the soil with water and fertilizer, at some point, the seed morphs into a plant that blossoms. That is, if you have taken courses to give you more career options, that’s not enough, you have to find ways to use and diverse the knowledge which is what will give you the opportunities. If you let your manager or HR know that you are interested in a senior level role, that’s not enough, you have to demonstrate that you are the best candidate for the opportunity which means performing your tasks excellently.
So, be a farmer and sow that career you want.
