A while ago, I had a brief career strategy session with a client who expressed her sadness about earning peanuts in her remote career despite her years of experience and expertise. Another client expressed his difficulty in asking for payment or negotiating fair pay because he felt he wasn’t good enough yet, so he has been doing projects for clients for free.
Honestly, I could relate- I once begged an employer to pay me a lesser (emphasis on the less) amount because they ‘psychologically’ mentioned that the amount initially stated was the same rate they could pay someone over there and since I was in Nigeria, they thought the exchange rate with the lesser amount they were offering would still be beneficial for me. Then, I thought that if I persuade them into paying me that less amount in order to move forward with my application, I would still get a chance to negotiate a better amount in the future after I show them my value. But I was wrong because once an employer has undervalued you and you have shown no effort to express your worth in the beginning, no matter how much sweat you show in your tasks or building your value, they can’t see you for anything more.
This is also the case for many jobseekers, they may feel like they're stuck in a rut, unable to break through the ceiling and earn what they're truly worth. If this sounds like you, don't despair. Here are strategies to help you unlock your earning potential in remote work;
